Miami Erie Canal Towpath Hike #2

Join the Dayton Hikers and the Dayton VA Medical Center for Hike #1 of the Warrior 150 Challenge. This is a non-competitive hiking event; results are not being tracked and will not be posted. Hikers will need to sign-in at the start of the hike, in order to participate in the Warrior 150 Challenge. Please hike at your own risk.

DATE:     Saturday, April 22, 2017

START TIME:     7:30 AM to 9:00 AM Registration

Registration for hike is from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM. If you participated in Hike #1, please sign-in on sheets at registration table If this is your first Warrior Challenge hike, please see Registration for Hikes information for details. Please bring completed Registration Form with you to Hike. An experienced hike leader will start hike at 8:30AM.

*** Hike has been changed to Saturday only, due to necessity and to increase participation. Hike at your pace and at your level. Hike as much as you are able. Participants will be given full credit of total hike distance towards the Warrior 150 Challenge, no matter how many miles/kilometers one is able to complete in 1 day (due to change in event to a single day only).

WHERE:             Along the Miami Erie Canal Towpath, from Spencerville to Minster.

START POINT DAY 1:                 Old Acadia Park, Spencerville

END POINT DAY 1:                      Minster Community Park

HIKE DETAILS:  

Dirt and grass foot path along the historic Miami Erie Canal towpath. Passes the remains of locks and canal artifacts. Passes through Spencerville, St. Mary’s New Bremen and Minster. Hike is not entirely on paved path, especially between Spencerville and St. Mary’s. Participants are encouraged to hike as much or as little as they are able. FOLLOW THE BLUE BLAZES at all times. Hikers follow the blue blazes and keep the canal on your left.

Parking, Drop-off and Pick-up:

START:  Old Acadia Park, address is W. North St. Spencerville, OH 45887. When driving in Spencerville, pass the Veterans Memorial Park on your right. At next stop sign, take a right onto North St. Spencerville Self Storage is on left (red garage doors), first street past buildings on left is entrance to park. White sign on left “Village of Spencerville, Old Acadia Park, 140 W. North St.”  Cross over railroad tracks and parking on the left. END:  Minster Community Park, address is W. 7th Street Minster, OH 45865 (directly behind the middle school). *If you are interested in walking a shorter distance, St. Mary’s near Memorial Park, is a location to consider (about 15 miles total distance from start). Each water station will have water to refill water bottles and some bottled water. Please prepare accordingly for your water, snack and food needs.

Water station #1: Bloody Bridge (has an equally awful story to go with the name  http://www.scaryforkids.com/bloody-bridge/  ) located at about mile 9. Known restrooms are noted on map (RR). RR may be a park bathroom or port-a-potty.

Participants will be walking past/through the towns of Spencerville, St. Mary’s, New Breman and Minster where going into a local store or business may be possible for food/water/restrooms.

Transportation Resources:

Arranging transportation for each hike is up to each individual participant (there are no shuttles to return to start location).
